A girl from the slums of Mumbai aspires to be a "Miss India" contestant as she falls in love with a wealthy businessman. It is the story of Ek Hasina Thi, a 1995 Hindi romance film directed by Dev Benegal and written by Irfan Akhtar. The film stars Akhilendra Mishra and Rajeshwari Sachdeva with Rahul Khanna, Deepak Tijori, Zeenat Aman and Mohan Agashe in supporting roles. It released on 31 December 1995 to critical acclaim and became one of the highest-grossing Indian films at that time. The film won the National Film Award in the category of Best Feature Film in Hindi - Producer. It was also awarded the Best Film at the 1996 Maharashtra State Film Awards. The film was selected as India's official entry for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, but was not nominated. From Ek Hasina Thi's songs, "Agar Man Ki Ganga Aai", "Bhail Baje", "Aashiqui Aa Ke" and "Mere Paas Maare" became popular songs of Hindi films. The latter two have also been used in Bollywood films. "Bhail Baje", sung by Pankaj Udhas, was also recorded in the album "Incredible India" by Shankar Tucker. The soundtrack of the film contains six songs composed by Aadesh Shrivastava. The song "Agar Man Ki Ganga Aati Hai" was sung very melodiously by Asha Bhosle and Kumar Sanu along with lyrics written by late Anand Bakshi, for which both won Filmfare Awards. Shrivastava received a nomination for Best Music Director at the 1996 ceremony, while singers Lata Mangeshkar, Anuradha Paudwal, Shabbir Kumar and Udit Narayan received nominations for their vocals in the other songs.
This is one of the highest grossing movies of 1995. The movie earned ₹6.30 crore in 1995 and was declared a hit. The movie earned $251,000 (₹870,00,000) in the overseas market and was declared a Super Hit overseas. The film was well received by critics and public alike. "The Times of India" rated the film 4 out of 5 stars and said that "Ek Hasina Thi is a very impressive debut for Benegal." "Rediff" called it one of the best films of 1995 and added that Rajeshwari Sachdeva shone in her role as Lajjo while Akhilendra Mishra's acting was flawless. "Mid Day" said that the film is "very passionate, very moving at times and very entertaining on others." Some of the later-day reviews are more demeaning. Malaika Arora of "Rediff", after seeing the movie, described it as a "Bollywood version of Sex And The City which comes with some seriously weak dialogues by Benegal." Rajeev Masand of CNN-IBN called it a "dull drama". A review in Youth Ki Awaaz criticized both Dev Benegal and Akhilendra Mishra for their acting skills.
